KAT-Verein für kontrollierte alternative Tierhaltungsformen e.V.
Inspected by KAT - Safety for the consumer
KAT is dedicated to the provision of a thorough system for verifying the origin and ensuring the traceability of eggs from alternative hen-rearing systems. Barn, free-range and organic eggs are all monitored. KAT has drawn up a list of strict criteria governing the rearing of laying hens, extending well beyond the standards stipulated by the EU. KAT cooperates closely with representatives from science and animal welfare in all areas of its work.

All members of KAT, from feedstuff suppliers along the entire process chain to the retail sector, have committed themselves to the strict KAT criteria.

In order to ensure the highest possible safety and transparency, KAT has set up a database system to serve as a central information platform on the origin, production and quality of eggs.

KAT's aim is to have every participant in the system, in both Germany and the neighbouring EU countries, implementing the stipulated criteria in a uniform manner, thereby increasing product safety on the market and excluding the possibility of abuse through falsely declared eggs. The inspections are carried out by testing institutes that are accredited in accordance with EN 45011 and trained by KAT on a regular basis.
