There are more than 1.8 billion young people in the world today but only half of them are working. According to estimations of the ILO (International Labour Organisation) 71 million young people didn’t have an employment in 2017. 600 million young people are neither enrolled in a training or an educational institution nor employed. Three-quarters of them are women.
16.7% of working youth in emerging and developing countries live below the extreme poverty threshold of US $1.90 per day. 89% of all new workplaces created in the least developed countries are in the informal sector , often under precarious conditions and adversely affect the future development prospects of young people.
Economic strengthening of young people
We demand humane employment for disadvantaged and excluded young people, especially for young women. Furthermore, we promote corporate responsibility and the definition of international labour standards. Together with young women and men we establish saving groups and work to improve the quality of teaching at vocational training institutions and schools. We support adolescents to strive for better working conditions and assist them during their entry into the professional life, as employees or entrepreneurs.
The adaptation and mitigation of global climate change and environmental protection are also important concerns in our work. The so-called „Trashy Bag“ project which we showcase at this year‘s Green Week is an example from Ghana which demonstrates what opportunities an engagement in environmental protection can offer for the economic future of adolescents and young adults.
Environmental protection in Ghana
It is estimated that 270 tons of plastic waste are generated in Ghana every day, most of it non-biodegradable. That adds up to over 22,000 tons of plastic waste in one year. Only about 2% of it is recycled. Whatever is not disposed of ends up on the streets of Ghana and other West African countries, which are littered with rubbish. One of the most common items being plastic drinking water sachets that have been discarded after use. They are choking the drains causing frequent flooding and thus increase the risk of disease.
„From Trash to Treasure“
is the motto of the „Trashy Bag“ project which was founded in 2007. Since 2018 , the project works in collaboration with Plan International. On the one hand, the aim is to show how the life of plastic products can be extended through recycling and to sensitise the population to issues of environmental protection and waste avoidance. On the other hand, the project contributes to the disposal of waste in Ghana by collecting drinking water bags, cleaning them and turn them into shopping bags. In addition, the project creates new jobs. Meanwhile, 60 people, mainly young women in Accra, the capital of Ghana found employment through the Trashy bag project. They are responsible for the collection, cleaning and further processing of the plastic bags into durable shopping bags. These are then sold via the Plan Shop (www.plan-shop.org), all profit goes to projects in the 52 Plan project countries worldwide.
This is only one example of how Plan and partners are working for a better future for children, adolescents and young adults, their families and communities. Visitors of the Plan booth can experience the influence of birth, gender and origin on their imaginary future by turning the "wheel of fate". As daughter of a doctor in India, a Lama shepherdess in Bolivia or a nomad family in the in the Sahel…what would your life look like ?
