Saale-Unstrut Land aus Wein und Stein

Halfway between Leipzig and Weimar, nestled in a pleasant landscape, lies the wine-growing region of Saale-Unstrut. Far from the big-city bustle, visitors can experience the history and culture, nature and romance of the area first-hand. The heart of Germany beat here in the Middle Ages: castle and ruins still tower over the river valleys, recalling a time when the first German kings and emperors lived here.

Naumburg is situated in the centre of this idyllic castle and wine region. The town boasts a history stretching back nearly 1000 years; totay, 31,000 people live here. The unique artistic and architectural treasures found in the old part of town have led to it being called „the Cathedral Town of Naumburg“ or „the Town of the Stone Wonders“. The town´s worldfamous landmark is the late Romanesque and early Gothic SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral. It owes its reputation as an artistic monument of international renown primarily to the work of the „Naumburg Master“, whose name remains unknown.

Visitors to the old part of Naumburg can soak up the flair of past centuries.
A closed ensemble of Renaissance and Baroque buildings line the spacious Market Square. The multi-storey attics recall the town´s role as a trading centre in the Middle Ages, when Naumburg´s Peter-Paul´s fair competed with the Leipzig fair.

On the south side of the square stands the majestic St. Wenceslas parish church. Its valuable interior includes the Hildebrandt organ; test-played by Johann Sebastian Bach, it is an important example of late Baroque organmaking. The centre of the old part of town is still partially encircled by the old town fortifications. The picturesque Marientor, an exceptionally well-preserved double-gate fortress with a curved courtyard between the two gates – a structure designed to trap potential enemies – is used on summer evenings as an atmospheric backdrop for open-air events. Another attraction for visitors is the former house of the family of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, which is now a museum open to the public.

Naumburg´s hotels and restaurants offer variety and refinement. Naumburg has a number of quality conference venues for conferences of up to 300 participants. Naumburg is the ideal starting point for exploratory tours – on foot, by bike, boat, car or train – into the old Central German cultural landscape of the Saale and Unstrut valleys, marked by historical locations, fortresses and castles as well as idyllic vineyard terraces in a landscape which for the most part is still unspoiled. There is also the possibility of going on half-day or whole-day excursions to the cultural city of Weimar or of the old trade-fair city of Leipzig. The university city Halle, the Wörlitzer cultural landscape near Dessau and Baroque Dresden are easy to reach from Naumburg.
